When you look at all the travel guides and sites about Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand they always use the “Clock Tower” as the guide of distance. For example, “the hotel is 5 minutes walk from the clock tower”. Ok, so, why is this clock tower so important then? The Clock Tower in Chiang Rai is a work of art, that is why!
Chiang Rai's clock tower was built in 2008 to honour His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej. It was designed and built by Chalermchai Kositpipat. The same artist who is still building The White Temple, also in Chiang Rai.
During the day, the clock tower in Chiang Rai looks quite gawdy. All gold and massive in size. The decorations to the clock tower go for a good 100m down each road that reaches the clock tower too. It really stands out that's for sure.
At night time though, it is a whole different story. This is when the Clock Tower really shows itself off. The way the lights shine on the tower is just too beautiful for words.
At 7pm, 8pm, and 9pm, every day of the year, for ten minutes each time, the clock tower turns into a masterpiece. Music is piped out of the clock tower, parts of the monument move, lights do lovely things. It is a totally remarkable piece of work.
