Had to do this a few years ago for a client.
Unfortunately I didn’t come across that until after the fact.
I’ve added a note to http://docs.moodle.org/21/en/Email_setup_gmail#class.smtp.php as it doesn’t appear that one of the code changes that the document tells you to make is really necessary.
