We may have only spent just over 12 hours in Chiang Khong but most of that time was at Baanrimtaling Home Stay Guest House. We really enjoyed it here. A very simple place, on the Mekong river, overlooking Laos.
There really isn't much to do in Chiang Khong. It is certainly just another border town where people just come and go through to the next country and vice versa. However, the town is actually quite nice. One main street of shops and restaurants and a few side streets where a lot of accommodation options are.
We chose to stay at the Baanrimtaling Home Stay as it was in our price range and it also had a great rating on both Tripadvisor and Hostelbookers. The double private ensuite cost us about $10 AUD for the both of us for one night. So cheap!
The location is about 5 minutes from where the bus drops you off in Chiang Khong. Click here to visit Hostelbookers for their detailed map of how to get there. A short walk later and you are greeted by very friendly people in a lovely wooden house that overlooks the Mekong River.
The guest house offers dorms, private rooms with shared bathroom facilities, private ensuite rooms and your own personal bungalow. Deluxe! All rooms have a balcony that overlook the view of the Mekong River. You can see Laos!
The private ensuite room we booked was simple but still very clean. We had comfortable beds with pillows. Towels were provided and we had a lovely hot water shower. It is cooler up in this part of Thailand so the hot water shower is recommended!
The wifi signal was adequate. Better reception was in the restaurant area. This is where you could get some pretty good meals. A little pricey but still, not bad. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony overlooking the river and talking with fellow travellers.
We met quite a few people at this guest house who had only come for the night but have ended up staying there for over a week or more. How relaxing is that!
The staff at Baanrimtaling Homestay will go out of their way to make sure you have a pleasant stay with them. They provided a free book swap for guests. We do recommend you take this up if you are nearly finished with the novel that you have. Trust us. It is a long boat road to Luang Prabang (if you are heading there).
They also provided a lot of information about Chiang Khong, the rest of northern Thailand and of course Laos. Handy 🙂
Thanks for a pleasant stay Baanrimtaling Home Stay. If we are ever in Chiang Khong again, we will stay with you!
