Getting from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka in Malaysia can seem a bit of a hassle to many, however, if you are just a little organised, it can be extremely easy to do!

There are many ways to get to Melaka from Kuala Lumpur by the use of buses, trains, taxis, cars, bikes, motorbikes and feet, however, we are going to share with you the easiest way that we found.

It would be great if we, as travellers, could travel from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka via train, alas, you can, but only part of the way. You can catch a train to Tampin from Kuala Lumpur but then you have to catch a bus to Melaka. During World War II, the Japanese removed the train line from Melaka to Tampin. Hopefully, they will build a replacement train line soon.

In the meantime, the easiest way to get to Melaka from Kuala Lumpur without having to switch and change transport is by bus.

Step 1 – Buying The Bus Tickets:
The day before you leave, go to the Puduraya Bus Terminal to buy your ticket to Melaka.

This step is actually quite important – buying bus tickets from one city to another can take anything up to half a day unless you go straight to a travel agent who will purchase the tickets on your behalf but also charge a lot extra just for getting the ticket for you.

When you go upstairs to the first floor of the complex, there are a LOT of bus company ticket sellers.  It is seriously mad in here. There are so many buses leaving Kuala Lumpur to go to many many places in Malaysia or near countries.

Asking around at the various stalls, there seemed to be a number of buses that went from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka. Many of these buses leave from the new bus terminal – Bandar Tasik Selatan – this is a good 15 minute train ride from KL Sentral Station.

We found one bus (that we know of) called Nice ++ Coaches – that leave from KL Sentral Train Terminal. They leave at about 11:15am, give or take a few minutes.

The price of our ticket from KL Sentral Terminal in Kuala Lumpur to Melaka Terminal in Melaka was approximately RM 35.00 each.

I am sure that you could get cheaper tickets from Bandar Tasik Seletan, but having to catch a train out to the bus station to then catch a bus was just another extra unnecessary leg for us to complete.

Step 2 – Catch Bus from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka
The bus ride from KL Sentral to Melaka was lovely. We received a cup of water each, a massive seat each that reclined back in total comfort, working air conditioning and even Planet of the Apes movie played for us weary yet comfortable travelers.

There was no toilet on board though. Take note of this. Generally the bus driver will stop every hour to 90 minutes for a toilet break though. If you are desperate to go, just ask the driver to stop for you, he will 🙂

Even though we left from KL Sentral Station, we did stop at Bandar Tasik Seletan to pick up other passengers. We both still thought it was easier to catch the bus from KL Sentral.

The bus ride took about 3 hours in total. There was a lot of traffic on the highway so a lot of stopping and starting for a while.

The bus will stop at the Melaka Terminal, about 4.5km out of Melaka city centre. You can catch a local bus from the terminal into town, Bus No. 17. Catching a taxi is also possible, prices fixed at between RM 15.00 and RM 20.00

Time taken – 2 – 4 hours depending on traffic.

  2. Great post. It will help a lot of traveller. And currently, Kuala Lumpur basically have a few bus station. And to go to the south part of Malaysia, like Melaka, Bandar Tasik Selatan TBS station mainly will serve the travellers fine. The station/terminal is newly built. And more organized than pudu station. If have chances, feel free to visit the terminal TBS and grap your ticket to move to south, to Melaka. Oh yes, it also have train services that bring people to KLIA air port.

    1. Hi Kchun, You are correct. We are about to write an updated post on how to get from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka easily (and back again). Thanks for the reminder!

      1. You’re welcome. Melaka is a lovely place. Not so busy during weekday and have a lot of food to taste. Your post will just help a lof of travellers to get there.

        1. How is it for Indian travelleres who are vegetarian? Are there places where they can eat or should they carry pack lunch?

          1. You should be fine in both Kuala Lumpur and Melaka. It would probably be wise to carry some snacks just in case however both places seem to have vegetarian options available. There is actually a Sikh temple in Melaka where you can go and get a free vegetarian meal. We visited it once. The food was delicious 🙂

  3. Greate blog.i suddently want go melaka.but not sure bout d buses before read this blog.now i feel good for my rushing holiday.tq.

  4. Thanks for this step-by-step post! My husband and I sure enjoyed Melaka, and the fact that we saved a ton taking a bus rather than a taxi. Very useful!

    1. Malacca is fairly compact so you can walk just about everywhere. It is however pretty warm so remember your hat and sunscreen and expect to get sweaty.

Off the top of my head the only place that you are likely to want to go that is away from the center of town is the bus station. To get to or from there you can either catch a local bus or take a taxi. The bus is cheaper but it can be a little confusing if you don’t speak Malay. We just walked everywhere else. There are some places around that rent bicycles if you want something a little faster. We never did that so I’m not sure how much it costs. I doubt it would be much however.

  5. I just checked Nice coaches and it said does not do the trip from Kuala Lumpur to Malaka, so must have ceased that service??
