Getting from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka in Malaysia can seem a bit of a hassle to many, however, if you are just a little organised, it can be extremely easy to do!
There are many ways to get to Melaka from Kuala Lumpur by the use of buses, trains, taxis, cars, bikes, motorbikes and feet, however, we are going to share with you the easiest way that we found.
It would be great if we, as travellers, could travel from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka via train, alas, you can, but only part of the way. You can catch a train to Tampin from Kuala Lumpur but then you have to catch a bus to Melaka. During World War II, the Japanese removed the train line from Melaka to Tampin. Hopefully, they will build a replacement train line soon.
In the meantime, the easiest way to get to Melaka from Kuala Lumpur without having to switch and change transport is by bus.
Step 1 - Buying The Bus Tickets:
The day before you leave, go to the Puduraya Bus Terminal to buy your ticket to Melaka.
This step is actually quite important - buying bus tickets from one city to another can take anything up to half a day unless you go straight to a travel agent who will purchase the tickets on your behalf but also charge a lot extra just for getting the ticket for you.
When you go upstairs to the first floor of the complex, there are a LOT of bus company ticket sellers. It is seriously mad in here. There are so many buses leaving Kuala Lumpur to go to many many places in Malaysia or near countries.
Asking around at the various stalls, there seemed to be a number of buses that went from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka. Many of these buses leave from the new bus terminal - Bandar Tasik Selatan - this is a good 15 minute train ride from KL Sentral Station.
We found one bus (that we know of) called Nice ++ Coaches - that leave from KL Sentral Train Terminal. They leave at about 11:15am, give or take a few minutes.
The price of our ticket from KL Sentral Terminal in Kuala Lumpur to Melaka Terminal in Melaka was approximately RM 35.00 each.
I am sure that you could get cheaper tickets from Bandar Tasik Seletan, but having to catch a train out to the bus station to then catch a bus was just another extra unnecessary leg for us to complete.
Step 2 - Catch Bus from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka
The bus ride from KL Sentral to Melaka was lovely. We received a cup of water each, a massive seat each that reclined back in total comfort, working air conditioning and even Planet of the Apes movie played for us weary yet comfortable travelers.
There was no toilet on board though. Take note of this. Generally the bus driver will stop every hour to 90 minutes for a toilet break though. If you are desperate to go, just ask the driver to stop for you, he will 🙂
Even though we left from KL Sentral Station, we did stop at Bandar Tasik Seletan to pick up other passengers. We both still thought it was easier to catch the bus from KL Sentral.
The bus ride took about 3 hours in total. There was a lot of traffic on the highway so a lot of stopping and starting for a while.
The bus will stop at the Melaka Terminal, about 4.5km out of Melaka city centre. You can catch a local bus from the terminal into town, Bus No. 17. Catching a taxi is also possible, prices fixed at between RM 15.00 and RM 20.00
Buses - many buses run from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka daily, hour after hour.
Location - KL Sentral Terminal or Bandar Tasik Seletan
Price - anything from RM 15.00 to RM 35.00
Time taken - 2 - 4 hours depending on traffic.
